THE AUSTRALIAN Medical Association has learned what newspaper editors have long known: a little irony is a dangerous thing. The cover of a recent edition of the Medical Journal of Australia, published by the AMA, purported to satirise the media’s coverage of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), which has seemingly reached epidemic proportions among certain groups of people in the United States. The irony was lost on the Federal Minister for Health, Dr Blewett, who – in the course of condemning “irresponsible and sensational” media coverage – criticised the journal as well.
