First AIDS death?

Sun-Herald, 10 July 1983:

A man suffering from AIDS is believed to have died in a Melbourne hospital this weekend.

If the report is correct the victim, a 42-year-old non-homosexual, is the first to die from AIDS in Australia.

The Medical registrar at Prince Henry’s Hospital said it had not been definitely established that the man had AIDS but certainly had all the symptoms.

“I cannot say whether or not he has died. But if he has, it would be better for his relatives to hear it from his family rather than reading about it in the press.” said Dr Speer.
